History

As we know that Roller Skating has a long history! The earliest roller skates known are from 1743 in a London Stage Performance but the inventor of this skate is unknown. In 1760 First recorded skate invention, by John Joseph Merlin, who created a primitive Inline Skate with small metal wheels.

In 18th-century in Europe, Skates were used in theater and musical performances, possibly to simulate ice skating onstage.  Early roller skating was done in a straight line because turning or curving was very difficult with the primitive skate designs of the time.

In 1857 the hobby of roller skating gained enough momentum to warrant the opening of the first public skating rinks. The Strand, London and Floral Hall had these first roller rinks.

In 1863 the four-wheeled turning roller skate or Quad skate with four wheels set in two side-by-side pairs (front and rear), was first designed, in New York City by James Leonard Plimpton.

In1875 Roller skating rink in Plymouth, England held its first competition.

Worldwide popularity for the sport surged from 1880-1910 in Europe, North & South America and Australia. In this period Figure Skating and Speed Skating were Appeared.In the 1930s to the 1950s, this era is known as the Golden Age of Roller Skating, many Skating Rinks were built throughout United States.

World Skate is the governing body for all Sports performed on skating wheels.

Roller Skating Federation of India is the Governing Body of Roller Skating in India Since 1955.

Roller Skating Association of Bengal(registration no. S0033616) is registered Organization in West Bengal under Society Registration Act 1961.
